Cal-West Custom Rods

Customer Testimonials

One fateful day I had the pleasure to meet Dennis Papike (Pappy) aka Cal-West Custom Rods.  Needless to say it wasn't long before the conversation went angler to angler. The first thing he asked me was had I ever fished a custom rod? I proceeded to tell him my production rods were top of the line, I only fish the best! He smiled and asked if I would like to try one, he also offered up an explanation as to why I should. Not long there after he plied his magic to a blank of my choosing and the rest, as they say is history. I was absolutely amazed! I like to think I speak with authority and conviction with consideration to my many tournaments and time on the water.
Custom built rods have magnified and fulfilled all of my expectations with regards to sensitivity, strength and durability. Cal-West Custom Rods craftsmanship and components are top notch which equates to longevity! You do the math.

I own several high end, factory built rods. Without exception, Dennis's craftsmanship outshines the factory rods by a wide margin. I was lucky enough to win one of his specially built rods in a raffle. Simply a work of art, and too nice to fish.....but I can't help myself. I now own six Cal-West Custom Rods, both fly and conventional. They are my go- to rods for stripers and largemouth. Not only is the craftsmanship top notch, but they out perform all  my other rods... no question. More Cal-West rods to come.

One more thing... everything is custom built, just the way you want it. They are made to order, or you can let Dennis loose to work his magic.

Hello Dennis,

I'm just back from a 2 week fishing trip to England where I gave the rod you built me a good work-out. I'm delighted. The rod performed exactly as I hoped it would. I used it to cast small dry flies just a few feet, as well as making longer casts across and upstream on medium-sized rivers. The rod behaves as a true 5wt. I caught many fish and didn't break a single tippet, apart from when I hung my fly in a tree.

One afternoon my brother who doesn't fish but who lives by a river and sees a lot of fly fishermen accompanied me on the river. He was truly amazed at how easily I could cover a current seam on the far side of the river. I want to thank you for recommending the blank and building the rod as I wanted. I could not be happier with the rod.

All the best, Michael Kearney
